Tips and guide of Motor Insurance

Tips and guide of Motor Insurance:

Road accidents occurs everyday and we never know when is our time. Those who have been experienced road accidents might know what do’s and dont’s when such thing happen. You may be a meticulously careful motorist who has never needed to make a claim, but it pays to have an umbrella ready in case it rains, doesn’t it?

Type of Motor Insurance

Motor insurance are compulsory if you buy a motor vehicle, there are many type of motor insurance available, however, the common types are:

Type of Motor Insurance

Third party cover This policy insures you against claims for bodily injuries or deaths caused to other persons (known as the third party), as well as loss or damage to third party property caused by your vehicle.
Third party, fire and theft cover

This policy provides insurance against claims for third party bodily injury and death, third party property loss or damage, and loss or damage to your own vehicle due to accidental fire or theft.
Comprehensive cover

This policy provides the widest coverage, i.e. third party bodily injury and death, third party property loss or damage and loss or damage to your own vehicle due to accidental fire, theft or an accident.

In this post, we share some info what you need to do if an accident occurs, in order to protect yourself. Firstly, you must stop your vehicle and exchange particulars with all the other people involved in the accident.

What you should do in the event of an accident/loss

  • Take notes of the accident – If you are involved in a motor accident, take notes of the accident, i.e. the names and addresses of all drivers and passengers involved, vehicle registration numbers, make and model of each vehicle involved, the drivers’ licence numbers and insurance identification as well as the names and addresses of as many witnesses as possible

  • Make a police report – You are required by law to lodge a police report within 24 hours of a road accident.

  • Notify your insurance company – You must notify your insurance company in writing with full details as soon as possible. Depending on the type of claim you intend to make, you may have to notify other insurance companies (please refer to ‘ Making a claim against an insurance company’ for details). If you fail to report the accident, you will be liable for your own loss as well as any third party claim against you.

  • Select the workshop – You must send your damaged vehicle to a workshop approved by your insurance company. If the accident occurs during office hours, you may call the hotline/ emergency assistance numbers provided by your insurance company. Otherwise, you may call your insurance company for the nearest approved workshop. Should the accident occur outside office hours and you are making a claim against your policy, i.e. an own damage claim, you should ensure that your vehicle is towed to a workshop approved under the Persatuan Insuran Am Malaysia Approved Repairers Scheme [called a PIAM Approved Repairers Scheme (PARS)]. If you are making a third party claim, it is advisable to also send your vehicle to a PARS workshop.

Making a claim against an insurance company Accident claims

When you are involved in an accident, you may either make an own damage claim or a third party claim for the breakdown cover :

Own damage claim

  • This refers to making a claim on your own insurance policy, i.e. you have a comprehensive policy. However, you will lose your NCD entitlement.

  • In notifying your insurance company of the accident, enquire about the names of approved workshops to send your vehicle for repair.

  • Submit the fully completed Motor Accident Report Form together with all supporting documents as soon as possible to your insurance company.

  • The workshop will commence repairs on your vehicle upon the approval of your insurance company.

  • Upon completion of repairs, you will be informed by the workshop to collect your vehicle.

Third party claim

  • You may make a third party claim if you are not the party at fault in the accident and you can retain your NCD entitlement.

  • There are two ways of making a third party claim, i.e. submit the claim directly to the insurance company of the party at fault or, if you have a comprehensive policy, submit the claim to your insurance company. You are encouraged to submit your claim to your own insurance company for speedier claims processing.

  • As the third party claimant, you are required to mitigate your loss i.e. you must act to minimise your loss.

  • Appoint a licensed adjuster to assess the loss. The workshop or the third party insurance company may advise you on this.

  • Submit the adjuster’s report and the fully completed Motor Accident Report Form together with all supporting documents as soon as possible.

  • You are eligible to claim from the third party insurance company for `compensation for actual repair time’ (CART) and compensation of excess. For the actual repair time of your vehicle, this is based on the adjuster’s recommendation on the number of days required for your car to be repaired. Insurance companies, at their own discretion, may allow an additional seven working days for any unforeseen or unavoidable delay. A standard scale of daily CART has been specified by the PIAM as follows:–

TypeCART/Day
Private Use Vehicle

Up to 1500ccRM30
Above 1500cc – 2000ccRM40
Above 2000ccRM50

Above 250cc

Alternatively, you may also claim the cost of hiring a replacement vehicle of equivalent type and capacity for the recommended number of days of actual repair time as evidenced by a receipt from a licensed car rental company.

Theft claims

  • After submission of the claim form, you must cooperate fully with your insurance company or its representative during the course of investigation of the theft claim.

  • In view that the police and your insurance company will require time to investigate your claim, you will receive the offer of settlement from your insurance company within six months from the theft notification or upon completion of police investigations, whichever is earlier

Principle of indemnity

The principle of indemnity is crucial in insurance. Based on this principle, the insurance cover will compensate your loss by putting you back to the same position you were in immediately before the loss. As you will be compensated only for the loss suffered, you cannot ‘profit’ from a motor insurance claim. Therefore, if your vehicle is more than five years old, betterment will apply.

Betterment occurs when in the course of repairing an accident-damaged vehicle, an old part is replaced with a new franchise part. In line with the principle of indemnity, you will have to bear the difference in costs as you are in a better position after the accident with the new franchise part. However, the application of betterment is at the discretion of your insurance company. Should your insurance company apply betterment, it will be in accordance with the standard scale of betterment adopted by the industry as follows :

Inside UNIFI’s broadband network

Inside UNIFI’s broadband network:

Somehow we had to publish this piece of information. Despite many blogs and forums with in-depth discussions about UNIFI broadband, there are still gross misconception of what is actually inside a typical UNIFI client premises equipment (or CPE) set up.

First timers are usually baffled as to why traditional cable routers with PPPoE does not work with UNIFI broadband, a service that uses PPPoE encapsulation similar its DSL sibling; Streamyx. Well, not that it doesn’t. There’s a just another layer in UNIFI’s high speed broadband network; a layer called VLAN.

Inside UNIFI physical lines that are laid into our homes, bandwidth is tunneled in a virtual LAN (VLAN) and separated before they are routed to our computer devices. UNIFI Broadband is a true triple play service, i.e. we get all three; data, voice and video services piped to us through a single channel high speed plastic fiber cable (FTTH) or vDSL. Hence the reason why VLAN networking is in the design from day one.

FTTH is deployed on landed properties like terrace houses and bungalows while vDSL being similar to traditional ADSL services like Streamyx, is used in deployments for high rise buildings where the laying of fresh fiber cables is no practical option.

The first component in a UNIFI Client Premises Equipment is either the Fiber BTU or vDSL modem. This device bridges raw network back to the nearest UNIFI Point-Of-Presence (POP). With a physical connection established between our homes and a UNIFI POP, the next immediate thing we have to do is to segregate the bandwidth and video tunnels by deploying any smart switch with IEEE802.1q VLAN tagging capability. Yes, any smart, managed switch can be used as long as they support the 802.1q networking standard.

The stock wireless router provided by UNIFI is an all-in-one device with VLAN, routing, firewall and wireless broadcast functions.

In the stock router provided by UNIFI, typically the D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, a standard D-Link wireless routing platform has been adopted and modified to include 802.1q VLAN tagging inside the same box. For this reason, UNIFI users will encounter the common scenario where only UNIFI routers appears to work in a UNIFI network and other commercially available routers apparently don’t. Again, it is not true that other wireless routers don’t work. It is just that they have not been essentially modified like the stock DIR-615, before the virtual tunnels in UNIFI’s VLAN-ed network can be traced by your router. Unless you have a VLAN switch or a virtual VLAN function inside a routing hardware like the D-Link DIR-615, this cannot be accomplished.

We have many questions posed to us, asking whether the TP-Link TL-SL2210WEB smart switch sold at our techSTORE can be placed after the router. No, you can’t. And it is due to the technical fact that VLAN tagging has to be done before the routing stage and not after. Also, there is no reason for home users to implement VLAN in a private network. Practical usages for VLAN are in aggressive networking environments where there are hundreds of users in the network and VLAN tagging is implemented in order to prevent problematic computers from affecting other computers or bringing down the availability of the entire network altogether.

TP-Link’s TL-SL2210WEB is a favourite component deployed by many UNIFI subscribers in their quest for better networking performance and equipment.

After you have segregated the respective VLANs data and IPTV, you can then focus on what routers is suitable for your usage. Choose all-in-one wireless routers (like the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND) if you have less than 5 users at home and where download and uploading activities are minimal.

For slightly heavier users, consider the combination of dedicated boxes like the TP-Link TL-R470T+ wired router and TP-Link TL-WA801ND wireless access point. By dividing the routing function and wireless infrastructure into two separate hardware, bandwidth performance will certainly become more efficient and faster.

Obviously it cost more to have a multi-hardware solution but the benefits are pretty significant. For example, users will immediately notice considerable speed performance even with one or more computers downloading files, while other users are hardly affected when doing web browsing or reading emails. Hardcore gamers too will benefit from lesser lag because the wired router can handle far much more data packet transfers than the stock equipment provided by UNIFI.

Simply put, purchasing a networking solution for your home is like buying shampoo. You can either choose between 2-in-one, all-in-one or you can pick the shampoo, conditioner and treatment in separate bottles. Experience tells us that the more bottles we buy, the better justice it does to our hair.

Review: Gogopal Q5.0 GPS Navigator with 3D Maps (Singapore and Malaysia)

Review: Gogopal Q5.0 GPS Navigator with 3D Maps (Singapore and Malaysia):

Gogopal Q5.0 gps

Ever since bought I my first car, I am depending on GPS navigator to travel on the road. I used Garmin GPS navigator, Garmin-Asus GPS phone, and TomTom navigation app for iPhone before.

Recently, I received a Gogopal Q5.0 GPS navigator for review. (Don’t confuse it with “PAPAGO!”) Read on for the detail review, specs, photos and video.

What’s in the box?

Gogopal gps box

gogopal Q5.0 gps navigator package content

The gogopal Q5.0 came in a square box package. Inside the box contains:

  • gogopal Q5.0 GPS navigator

  • 2GB MicroSD card with SpeedNavi SQ navigation software with Singapore & Malaysia maps

  • In-car cradle

  • Car charger

  • AC Charger

  • Mini USB cable

  • User manuals and quick start guide

Everything you need for a GPS navigator is included in the box. Don’t need to buy optional item.

Thin and sleek

Gogopal GPS side

The Gogopal Q5.0 GPS navigator has 5-inch touch screen display with 480×272 resolution. It is slim (12mm thick only) and has a sleek design with round edges.

The power button is at the top. A stylus pen is hidden at the lower right corner. At the left side, there are mini USB port, MicroSD slot, headphone minijack, and COM port.

You charge and transfer data using the mini USB port. I have no idea what the COM port use for, it is not mentioned in the manual.

In-car cradle has a strong suction cup to mount gogopal firmly on the car windscreen. The cradle also latch the device very tight and not easy to unlatch.

Gogopal Q5.0 GPS navigator review

Gogopal gps menu

Gogopal GPS menu

After turn on Gogopal GPS navigator, you need to tap on the “Navigation” button to launch the GPS navigator software, Speednavi SQ. The main screen is simple, 3 big icon: Map, Destinations, Settings.

A “system” menu at the upper right corner allows you to set volume level, check GPS status and system info.

Gogopal GPS nearby

Gogopal GPS search nearby

There are couple of ways to search for a destination using Gogopal. You can search by POI (Point Of Interest) name, Address, Postal Code (Singapore only), Nearby POI, POI category, enter coordinate, and more.

Gogopal gps virtual keyboard

gogopal GPS virtual keyboard

When tapping (use your finger or included stylus) the virtual keyboard for searching, it will grey out the alphabet that’s not available, and displays number of results in bracket. It is handy to fine tune your search, find the next alphabet of your destination search. If too many results, you can narrow down the results by City and Category.

Gogopal gps address search

Gogopal gps address search

According to my past experience, searching destination by address often returns no result and useless. Surprisingly, Gogopal’s address search – WORKS! You simply enter destination’s street name and it will return matched streets in database for you to select the correct one (if same street name found in different states).

Gogopal also searches house number so that you get the exact location of the house on a long street. House number search is limited by its map database though.

After setting destination, you will get the map layout but the navigation will not start until you tap on the “Destn” button on the map. That’s a bit confusing. Also, you can also set the location as a “Way Point”, a point on the map where you want to pass through.

Gogopal GPS signal searching is fast, often locking my car position in less than 1 minute while recalculating new route takes 2-3 seconds.

Gogopal GPS 3d map

Gogopal GPS 3d map

Gogopal comes with 3D map with 3D buildings which make navigation easier, and easy to locate nearby landmarks. As far as I tested, the included map is quite updated and they actively update the map as well.

Your gogopal comes with a 1-year free map update period. You can purchase 1 more year of map updates for only RM45 after the free update period has expired.

Gogopal GPS navigation display is very informative, including the current street, next exit, next 2 turns, estimated time to destination, distance to destination, etc.

Instead of “estimated time to destination”, I would prefer it to shows “estimated time to “reach destination”, so that know what time I will reach destination at one glance.

Gogopal gps lane infomation

Gogopal GPS lane infomation

I love the split window for Junction Zoom and Lane information features. “Junction Zoom” it gives a clear view of the path ahead to help you make the correct turn. “Lane Information” tells you the correct lanes for the next turn or maneuver. No more wrong turning with these helpful features!

When you are on highway, gogopal helpfully shows the rest areas and highway exits along your route. Don’t want to use highway or want a toll-free route? You can change route setting right on the map display.

I have been annoyed by Garmin’s speed limit speech alert. Gogopal use “beep” for speed alert instead, which is much less annoying. There’s option to turn off speed limit too.

Gogopal comes with 9 language voice guidance system: English, Chinese, Malay, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese. The user interface can also be changed to 11 languages Chinese, Malay, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Spanish and French to suit your needs.

In the GPS navigation setting, the volume only has 5 level setting. Changing single volume level will make the volume too soft. What I do is setting the volume to maximum in navigation app but adjust the Windows CE system volume.

More than a GPS navigator

The Gogopal Q5.0 GPS navigator runs Windows CE 6.0. When turn on, you see 6 menu icons: navigation, player, tools, system, games, and nav.setup.

Navigation will launch the GPS navigator software.

The “Player” is a media player that allows you to play music, video, ebook, photo and flash.

Under “Tools” are: note, calculator, calendar.

The “Games” has 8 simple games: tetris, snake, chess, gobang, reversi, boxman, linlink, duiduipeng. The system settings include volume, backlight, laungae, etc.

Nav.setup allows you to setup path for navigation software.

LiewCF’s Buying Advice

I like Gogopal Q5.0 GPS Navigator, the 3D map and split window view are very useful! I would recommend it to friends who need a easy-to-use in-car GPS navigator under RM500.

Celcom Samsung Galaxy Note bundled pricing revealed

Celcom Samsung Galaxy Note bundled pricing revealed:

UPDATE: Celcom’s Samsung Galaxy Note plan detail is now live on their website.

The Samsung Galaxy Note will be on sale in Malaysia tomorrow with telco tie up on Celcom and DiGi. Sold at RM2,299 outright, those that want it cheaper would normally opt for a postpaid contract.

Finally Celcom’s bundling plans have been revealed and it is offered as low as RM1,368 with 18 months contract of Celcom Exec 250. There’s a shorter 12 month period and other lower commitment postpaid options as well. If you don’t intend to stay on contract for long, the Galaxy Note can be yours for RM1,818 on 12 months contact of Celcom Exec 50 with 1GB of data.

Looking at the highest plan option, Celcom is subsidising as much as RM931 for the device. This is RM30 more than their Samsung Galaxy S II bundling plan where they subsidised RM901.

Remember, the event is happening at Pavilion KL, Jusco Aeon Tebrau JB and Queensbay Mall Penang from 10AM onwards tomorrow.

So next question is how much is DiGi offering it? For the Samsung Galaxy S II, DiGi offered a RM700 subsidy. If it is the same for the Note, we could expect RM1,599 for 24 months contract on DG Smart Plan.

For those that want to get it outright, Samsung Facebook page has posted a list of participating Elite Partners that will carry the device.

The sharp looking RM1,999 Motorola RAZR will go on sale in Malaysia on 11.11.11. During the launch event, no telco plans have been officially announced until now. Celcom has finally revealed on their website that they are carrying the RAZR from as low as RM1308 on contract on the highest commitment Celcom Exec 250 plan with 18 months duration.

If you notice the header above, it mentions as low as RM1,138 but it is no where to be found on Celcom website. Perhaps, that’s for Celcom BIZ which isn’t available yet.

Note:Another interesting discovery made by heeman is that the model is written as “Droid RAZR”. The Droid RAZR is a 4G LTE device while the Motorola RAZR is the 3G GSM version for the rest of the world. Whichever it is, lets hope Celcom is bundling the right version that will work on their network.

The new, rebooted Motorola RAZR has a 4.3 inch qHD Super AMOLED Advanced capacitive touchscreen (540×960 pixel resolution) display and runs on Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) operating system which is upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, TI OMAP 4430 chipset, has 16GB of internal memory and 1GB of RAM. It is also one of the thinnest phones at just 7.1mm(against Galaxy Nexus’s 8.9mm and iPhone 4S’s 9.3mm thickness).

Our insider told us that Celcom Axiata would sell the Motorola RAZR at the RRP price of 1999, it will also be available via Brightstar on the same day, at the same price. With a 18-months contract, the new RAZR can be purchased for as low as RM1138 from Celcom.
